Monika’s Story
“A year ago, I couldn’t walk on my own. I suffered an injury in 2020 that left me with a torn calf muscle and nerve damage, the latter of which prevented my muscle from recovering.
My medical team prepared me for the worst, from the neurologist who told me I’d have nerve pain for the rest of my life, to my primary care physician who told me that the damage to my leg was permanent. And maybe worst of all were the voices in my head, which combined with what my doctors were saying, indicated I should give up on walking. I became depressed, withdrawn, and felt alone.
Fortunately, a friend told me how NCEFT helped her, and she suggested I contact them. During my intake interview, I remember being nervous, thinking that NCEFT would not accept me because I couldn’t walk unassisted. But I was wrong. I did not understand how welcoming NCEFT is and the scope of the services it provides.
I began regular adaptive riding lessons with one of NCEFT’s riding instructors, Matt, who has always been a positive source of light. I have learned a lot from Matt and all of NCEFT’s staff and volunteers. And maybe most of all, I have learned a lot from the world’s best horse, Woody, who is terrific and never fails to make me laugh. A year later I am walking unassisted.
I have gone from feeling weak, alone, and depressed to feeling strong, proud, supported, and happy. Thank you, NCEFT, for what you’ve given me and many others.
Please consider supporting NCEFT’s work with clients like me who have found hope and community through participating in their services. Your generosity will truly make a difference in the lives of people in need.”
